Dedicated on July 4, 2025, this mural is a true “people’s project.” The City and the Kansas Arts Commission collaborated with local artist Karem Gallo to create a vibrant welcome to Liberal. The design features the word “LIBERAL” in bold, stylized letters, with each letter containing a different scene representing the town’s identity—including the Wizard of Oz, aviation history, Pancake Day, and the region’s agricultural roots. Surrounded by native sunflowers, it serves as a colorful summary of everything that makes the community unique.

Pancake Day Racers Mural
Located in the heart of Liberal, this mural serves as a vibrant tribute to our most cherished tradition: International Pancake Day. Commissioned by the First National Bank in the late 1980s to celebrate Liberal’s centennial, the piece was brought to life by the renowned Kansas artist Stan Herd.
The mural’s centerpiece captures the energy of two women in the iconic racing pose—skillets in hand and pancakes ready. This imagery honors the spirited competition held every Shrove Tuesday, a friendly bond our community has shared with our friends in Olney, England, for generations.

located inside Billy’s AYR Lanes, pays tribute to the history of the Texaco gas station and classic American cars.
