Southwest Kansas Celebrates 11 Years of the “Rooster Roundup” Pheasant Hunting Contest.
Liberal (Seward County), Dodge City (Ford County), Montezuma (Gray County), Garden City (Finney County), Hugoton (Stevens County), Jetmore (Hodgeman County), Scott City (Scott County), and Ness City (Ness County), Kansas — Eight counties in Southwest Kansas are proud to celebrate the 11th Annual “Rooster Roundup” Pheasant Hunting Contest, making this year’s hunting season bigger and better than ever!




This season, 475 pheasants will be banded on the leg and released across participating counties: Seward County near Liberal, Ford County near Dodge City, Gray County near Montezuma, Finney County near Garden City, Stevens County near Hugoton, Hodgeman County near Jetmore, Scott County near Scott City, and Ness County near Ness City.
Liberal's 75 banded birds (Black bands) will be released in Walk in Hunting Areas (WIHA) throughout Seward County. If you’re lucky enough to bag one of these special banded pheasants, bring your leg band to an approved check-in location to register and claim your prize. Every hunter who turns in a band will receive a commemorative “Rooster Roundup” hat and a community gift valued at $10 or more. But that’s not all—every registered band also enters you into the drawing for seven GRAND PRIZES, each worth $500 in community gifts (one per participating community). Bands must be returned to the Liberal Tourism Information Center (1 Yellow Brick Road). Band holders will receive a prize for registering bands and be entered into a drawing for the grand prize of $500 (Chamber Bucks) at the end of the season. The contest runs November 8, 2025, through January 31, 2026, with the GRAND PRIZE drawings taking place shortly after the season closes. Winners will be contacted by phone.
Kansas consistently ranks as one of the top three compared to other states' annual harvest of pheasants. With 185,000 acres of walk-in hunting land available in Southwest Kansas, hunters will have plenty of opportunities to bag birds, win prizes, and be part of this long-running tradition.

Seward County (Liberal), Ford County (Dodge City), Finney County (Garden City), Gray County (Cimarron), Hodgeman County (Jetmore), Stevens County (Hugoton), and Ness County (Ness City) are pleased to announce the 10th annual pheasant hunting contest.
During this year’s hunting season, 425 pheasants will be banded on the leg and released in Scott County (near Scott City), Ford County (near Dodge City), Finney County (near Garden City), Stevens County (near Hugoton), Hodgeman County (near Jetmore), Seward County (near Liberal), and Ness County (near Ness City). If you are lucky enough to bag one of the banded pheasants, bring your leg band to one of the approved locations to register the band and claim your prize! Once you register the leg band at an approved location (listed below), you will automatically receive a “Rooster Roundup” hat and a community gift worth at least $10.00. At that time, your leg band will also be entered into a drawing to win a GRAND PRIZE of $500.00 in community gift certificate “bucks” (one per community) to be used for purchases of the winner’s choice.
The “Rooster Roundup” Pheasant Contest runs from November 9, 2024, to January 31, 2025. If your bagged bird has one of the leg bands, you must bring the leg band to one of the approved locations to register your band and claim your prize! Drawing for the GRAND PRIZE for “Rooster Roundup” will occur after the

Rules & Regulations
- 475 banded pheasants will be released in Ford, Gray, Finney, Stevens, Hodgeman,
Seward, Scott, and Ness counties. - No cost to enter.
- Open to all licensed hunters.
- Contest runs Nov. 8, 2025 – Jan. 31, 2026.
- Each leg band must be turned in at an approved location to be registered.
- A number is assigned to each leg band, and the GRAND PRIZE winner will be revealed the week following the contest’s end on January 31, 2025.
- Hunters must present a valid hunting license when submitting a band.
- All State and Federal firearms regulations apply.
Prizes include:
• Commemorative “Rooster Roundup” hat for each registered leg band.

- Some communities will be releasing more than 50 birds.
- $10.00 community gift certificate ‘bucks’ per each registered leg band (425 TOTAL).
- Some communities will be giving gifts worth more than $10.00.
- $500.00 GRAND PRIZE community gift certificate ‘bucks’ or prize. (7 TOTAL – 1 per community).
- “Bounty Birds” prizes will only be given to winners who hunt in the Dodge City area.
- “Bounty Birds” will have a specific-colored band and will be different from the “Rooster Roundup” bands. Those bands are exclusive to a series of separate prizes.
- Please check each community for a full list of birds released and available prizes.
